           The Gifts You Give Your Future Skin
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           My son recently turned three, and all he has wanted to do was race and play with me. We spent the afternoon running, laughing and trying to beat each other to the finish line. While I was playing with him, I was thinking about how many more moments like this I wanted to have. I want to be able to keep up with him as he grows, to stay active with him for as long as possible.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

            ﻿
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           That realization made me think about health in a different way. Some of the choices we make today are really gifts to our future selves. Taking care of our bodies gives us the chance to stay present for the people and activities we love later. It made me start thinking about what other long-term gifts I could give myself — including protecting my skin.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           If you could give your future self a gift, what would you want? Most people think of money, memories, or something meaningful. One of the best gifts you could give is healthy skin. Your skin remembers everything — the sun, the smiles, and the seasons. The habits you build now can affect your skin’s long-term health.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The good news is that daily choices can protect your skin over time.

           Up to 90% of visible skin damage is caused by ultraviolet (UV) exposure which leads to wrinkles, dark spots, uneven texture, and loss of firmness.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;

           Even on cloudy days, UV rays still reach your skin. A broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher helps protect against both UVA (aging rays) and UVB (burning rays).

           Who doesn’t love a sunny beach day, a scenic hike, or a backyard BBQ? Soaking up the warm sunlight, spending time with friends, and enjoying the outdoors can feel energizing and refreshing. But too much sun exposure? Not so much fun.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;

           UVA and UVB rays don’t just cause sunburn, they accelerate skin aging and increase the risk of skin cancer. Long-term exposure also raises the chances of developing conditions like melasma and vitiligo. Goh et al. found that these pigmentary disorders have the most significant negative impact on quality of life, as they are often resistant to treatment and prone to recurrence (2023). The good news? Proper sun protection can help prevent them.

           For added safety, Dr. Nern suggests hats labeled with a UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) rating. UPF-rated fabrics are thicker and more durable, providing excellent defense against harmful UV rays. The higher the UPF, the better the protection. Many brands now offer UPF 50 hats as the standard. Plus, they’re low-maintenance—just wash and dry them after frequent use, and they’re ready to protect you again.

The UV index helps mitigate these risks by providing real-time information about UV radiation levels, allowing individuals to plan their outdoor activities and sun protection measures accordingly.

           How the Sun Sneaks Up on Your Skin

           There are three types of UV radiation: UVA, UVB, and UVC. All three types contribute to skin damage, but UVA is most often associated with aging and pigmentation, or uneven skin tone. Basically, the sun can mess with almost everything your skin does.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           ●     Over time, sun damage can cause irritation, itchiness, or dry skin, which may weaken your skin’s natural ability to protect the rest of your body.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            ●     Your body also contains sweat glands and your skin helps regulate body temperature through sweat! However, sun aging may damage sweat function, and many elderly people may be more sensitive to hot temperatures.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            ●     Your skin normally heals wounds quickly through the regeneration of cells, but photoaging from the sun may slow this process or even reduce the strength of newly healed skin.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            ●     Melanin is the natural pigment in your skin — it gives your skin and hair their color. Sun damage can reduce your skin’s production of melanocytes, or cells that produce melanin, and cause uneven pigmentation or skin tone.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            ●     Your skin also has nerves that allow you to feel sensations, such as touch or pain. When the skin receives increased amounts of sunlight, there are reduced nerve endings, which may lead to reduced sensory perception.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            ●     The dermis of the skin (below the epidermis, or the top layer of the skin) is composed of collagen and elastin, which allows it to be flexible and resilient. UV rays from the sun can break down the collagen and elastin in your skin, which causes wrinkles, decreased skin strength, and sagging.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
            
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           The Fix? Protect Your Skin Like a Pro:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
            
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The good news is that the consequences of photoaging mentioned above can be prevented. Let’s talk about how you can keep your skin looking great for years to come.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           ●     Wear protective clothing (long sleeve shirts, dark colors, jackets, sunglasses, hats, etc.)
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            ●     Always use broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of at least 30 — Daily sunscreen use is the best anti-aging product you can invest in. Sunscreen provides a barrier to the skin so that light may be reflected and scattered. Both broad spectrum chemical and physical sunscreens reduce UV light exposure when applied correctly.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           ●     Check your skin daily for any changes or new spots. Lightening creams may be applied for areas of uneven skin tone.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           ●     Avoid long sun exposure if possible and the use of tanning beds (seriously, skip them!)
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           ●     Use topical vitamins like C and E, which can increase collagen synthesis and provide nutrients to the epidermis.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           ●     You can also use ferulic acid, which is found in the cell walls of seeds, leaves, and roots of fruits, vegetables, cereals, and grains, to protect against skin aging.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            ●     Retinol (both prescription and non-prescription options) can be applied daily to improve inflammation, fine lines and wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
            
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

           If you’ve ever come home from a cloudy day outdoors only to find yourself red and sunburned, you’re not alone. Many people assume that overcast skies provide protection from the sun’s harmful rays, but that’s a dangerous misconception. As Dr. Nern explains, “Up to 80% of UV rays penetrate through clouds. That’s why sunscreen is a daily must, rain or shine, and summer or winter.”

            If you have ever used or considered using a tanning bed, that’s enough exposure! It’s time to close that door for good!
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Like sunlight, tanning beds give off ultraviolet radiation (UVR). Your body produces melanin, the pigment that affects skin color, to help protect against the damage that UVR has on DNA.¹ Tanning beds can produce 10 to 15 times more UVR than the sun.²Using a tanning bed just once increases the risk of melanoma—the deadliest form of skin cancer—by 20%, and each additional session per year raises the risk by 1.8%.³ Because of these dangers, many countries have restricted or banned tanning beds.⁴ Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Nern warns, "There’s no such thing as a safe tan from a tanning bed

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Tanning beds can cause different types of skin cancer. Melanoma is responsible for over 80% of skin cancer deaths.⁶ It develops from the cells that produce melanin and can affect all skin tones. Using tanning beds before age 20 increases your risk of melanoma by 47%.⁷ Other common skin cancers, basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), form in the outer layer of the skin.⁸ Indoor tanning raises the risk of BCC by 24% and SCC by 58%.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Not only do tanning beds increase your risk of developing skin cancer, but they can also cause burns, loss of consciousness and eye damage, all of which can require hospital treatment. In addition to these consequences, tanning beds also cause premature skin aging, including the development of wrinkles, fine lines, sagging skin, and age spots. ⁹
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            If you would like the “bronzed look” without the risk of skin cancer, Dr. Nern advises opting for self-tanning products, which come in various forms including sprays, mousses, and lotions. Self tanning products contain a compound that reacts with the top layer of your skin to create a temporary tan.¹⁰ In addition to being convenient to use, they offer different colors in order to suit different skin complexions. Self-tanning products also allow greater control over the tanning process. The product can be reapplied several times to gradually develop color for a more natural look. They make it possible to avoid unwanted patches of discoloration or tan lines that normally result from excessive sun exposure.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           So, next time you think about tanning, we hope you reflect on your skin's well-being and choose
          &#xD;

           The roads I know best are two-lane highways—quiet stretches through farmland, small towns, and forests. Growing up in rural Wisconsin, I learned early on that healthcare often meant travel. A check-up could require hours of driving, missed work, and out-of-pocket expenses. For many families, it just wasn’t feasible.

           As a traveling dermatology assistant, I’ve spent the past year helping provide free skin cancer screenings and sun safety education in several communities—many facing the same barriers I saw growing up. In these areas, people often go out of their way to thank us for what we do, which resonates deeply with me. 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Since joining The Sun Bus, I’ve met people from all over the US—at health fairs, festivals, schools, workplaces, and farmers markets. We’ve parked the bus just about everywhere, from busy city blocks to empty parking lots in quaint mountain towns. Each stop has taught me something new. After months of screenings and conversations, here are a few lessons that have stayed with me:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           1. Prevention Saves Lives
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           In a sunny state like Colorado, prevention is everything. A simple conversation can change someone’s life. I’ve seen people come up to the bus just to ask a quick question and end up getting checked for something serious. We’ve found suspicious spots that people didn’t even know were a problem. Seeing those patients get the care they needed reminded me how powerful screenings and preventative care can be.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           2. Education is a Superpower
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Whether I was explaining the ABCDEs of skin cancer or using the VISIA camera to reveal hidden sun damage, I saw how curious people are about their health. Helping turn that curiosity into action—like wearing sunscreen or reducing time spent in the sun—was a powerful reminder of how education can inspire lasting change. Giving people the knowledge to care for their skin, often for the first time, felt like a meaningful step toward long-term health and prevention.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           3. Mobile Care Reaches People Who Need It Most
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Many people we screened hadn’t seen a dermatologist in years—if ever. Some lived hours from the nearest clinic or didn’t have insurance. By showing up in their neighborhood, we removed those obstacles. This showed me that mobile clinics like The Sun Bus are proof that care doesn’t need an address.
           &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           As I wrap up my time on the road, I’m excited to carry these lessons with me into my next chapter. I’m looking forward to starting medical school at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where I’ll be part of the rural medicine program. It feels like coming full circle—returning to the same place that shaped my view of healthcare, now equipped to give back in new ways.
          &#xD;

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

           As warm weather increases, so does family time outdoors, but it also brings increased exposure to the sun’s harmful rays. Whether you’re planning a beach trip, a walk in the park, a picnic, or just playing in the backyard, sun safety for babies and children is essential for preventing sunburns, skin irritation, and long-term damage like premature aging or skin cancer. Even short bursts of unprotected sun exposure can have lasting effects, especially on delicate, developing skin.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           Dr. Karen Nern, a board-certified dermatologist and mother, offers simple, science-backed guidance to help families keep their children safe in the sun, starting from the very beginning.

           “Babies under six months should be kept out of direct sunlight,” says Dr. Nern.*
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;

          &#xD;

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h2&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           “Make sun safety a habit early. It’s a lifelong gift you can give your kids,” says Dr. Nern.**
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;

            Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen

           Starting sun protection habits early helps children recognize the value of caring for their skin. From applying sunscreen before school or summer camp to wearing hats while hiking or playing at the park, these actions become natural with practice and set the stage for long-term health-conscious behavior.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            According to the Skin Cancer Foundation and recent studies by Li

      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           , there is evidence that just one blistering sunburn during childhood can double the risk of developing melanoma later in life. By being consistent now, you're helping your child avoid major health risks in the future and teaching them to prioritize their well-being.

"Sunscreen is essential, but it’s just one piece of the puzzle," says Dr. Nern. To fully protect your skin, it is important to adopt a multi-layered approach to sun safety. Here are Dr. Nern’s top tips for staying safe in the sun:

    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

           1. Seek Shade During Peak Hours
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;

            The sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., making this the most dangerous time for sun exposure. If you can, seek shade under trees, umbrellas, or other shelters during these hours. This simple action can significantly reduce your risk of sunburn and long-term skin damage. However, it is important to remember that shade alone is not enough. UV rays can still reflect off surfaces like water, sand, and pavement, so additional protection is necessary.

Light, tightly woven fabrics offer better protection than thin, loosely woven material. Some clothing has even been designed with built-in UV protection, which provides an extra layer of defense against harmful rays. Brands such as Collibar, UV Skinz, Solbari, and Cabana Life have sun protective clothing with UPF 50+ which blocks 98% of UVA/UVB rays.

            I spoke with Dr. Karen Nern, MD, a board-certified dermatologist, who explains that many people underestimate how quickly sunscreen can wear off, stating that sunscreen should be reapplied
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           “Every two hours. Even water-resistant formulas need to be reapplied to maintain their effectiveness.”
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Sunscreen is designed to protect your skin from harmful UV rays, which can cause sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;sup&gt;&#xD;

            But it doesn’t last all day. Several factors can cause sunscreen to wear off. Physical activity or heat can lead to sweating, which can degrade the ingredients in sunscreen over time. While water-resistant sunscreen can help to diminish barrier protection during water exposure, it can still degrade with extended exposure and needs to be reapplied.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;sup&gt;&#xD;

            Once you get out of the pool or finish your activity, drying off with a towel can remove your sunscreen. If you plan to stay in the sun, make sure to reapply to ensure full coverage. In your day to day, natural skin oils and touching your face can reduce sun protection.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Okay, so I only need to reapply sunscreen if I am outdoors? While it’s true that UVB rays - which cause sunburn - are mostly blocked by windows, UVA rays can still penetrate glass and contribute to premature aging and skin damage.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;sup&gt;&#xD;

           Additionally, blue light from screens may impact skin health, leading some experts to recommend sunscreen use even indoors. If you work near a window or use screens for long hours, consider reapplying, especially on exposed areas like your face, neck, and hands.

           Tips for Reapplying Sunscreen
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;

  &lt;ol&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Choose an SPF 30 sunscreen at least.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Set a reminder to reapply every two hours, especially if you’ll be outdoors.
           &#xD;

            Find a good makeup-friendly sunscreen to make reapplication easy.

            Sunscreen powder, SPF-infused cushion compacts, or spray are some options.
           &#xD;

      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
          
             Use water-resistant formulas if you plan to swim or sweat.

            When it comes to sun protection, sunscreen is your first line of defense. But with so many options, how do you choose the right one?

           According to Dr. Karen Nern,
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            board-certified dermatologist, Mohs micrographic skin surgeon, and co-founder of The Sun Bus,
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           it’s all about understanding what your skin needs.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           "Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30," advises Dr. Nern. "Broad-spectrum means it protects you against both UVA and UVB rays, which are both harmful to your skin."
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            UVA rays go deeper into the skin and can cause loss of elasticity as well as sun damage that can lead to skin cancer. UVB rays cause burning, which can also lead to skin cancer. Without this dual protection, your skin remains vulnerable to long-term damage.
            &#xD;
        &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Water resistance is another crucial factor. Activities like swimming or outdoor exercise often result in sweat or water exposure, reducing sunscreen’s effectiveness. Choosing a water-resistant product ensures that your skin remains protected during these activities. However, it’s equally important to remember to reapply, as even the best sunscreens lose their effectiveness over time. Water-resistant sunscreens, which can last on wet or sweaty skin for up to 80 minutes. For sunscreens that are not waterproof or sweatproof, they will need to be reapplied every two hours or after swimming or sweating.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;

            also recommends considering your skin type. "

           If you have sensitive skin, mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are often a better choice because they’re less likely to cause irritation and are a very effective option
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           ." Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide act as physical barriers that sit on the skin’s surface, reflecting harmful rays away from the skin. Unlike chemical sunscreens, which absorb UV rays, mineral options are less likely to cause irritation or allergic reactions, making them ideal for children and those with delicate skin.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Sunscreen is the number one tool to fight skin cancer, the most common kind of cancer in the US. While sunscreen is an essential defense, it’s not the only measure you should take. Wearing protective clothing, such as long-sleeved shirts, pants, and wide-brimmed hats, enhances your protection. Seeking shade during peak sunlight hours, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., further reduces your exposure to harmful rays.

Many people apply too little, which can significantly reduce the level of protection. Reapplication is equally vital, especially after swimming, sweating, or towel drying.

These inorganic preservatives are commonly found in everyday foods and beverages from wine and dried fruit to sodas and medications. While useful for extending shelf life and preventing discoloration, sulfites can trigger serious allergic reactions and may play a hidden role in contact dermatitis.
          &#xD;

           What Are Sulfites?
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h2&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Sulfites are chemical compounds that release sulfur dioxide, a gas that acts as a powerful antioxidant and antimicrobial. They're used to preserve the color, flavor, and freshness of foods such as fruit juices, seafood, baked goods, and alcoholic beverages. Sulfites also occur naturally through the fermentation process, especially in wine and beer.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Though sulfites have been approved for use by the FDA, any food or drink that contains 10 parts per million (ppm) or more must be labeled accordingly. However, labeling doesn't always guarantee safety, particularly for individuals with sulfite sensitivity.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h2&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Sulfite Sensitivity: More Than a Food Allergy
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h2&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           For some individuals, exposure to sulfites can lead to a range of adverse reactions including wheezing, chest tightness, coughing, and even life-threatening bronchospasms, especially in people with asthma. Others may experience skin-related symptoms such as urticaria (hives) or angioedema (swelling).
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Sulfite sensitivity can develop at any point in a person's life and is not routinely included in standard allergen testing in the United States. In contrast, screening panels in Europe and by the North American Contact Dermatitis Group (NACDG) include sulfites, specifically metabisulfite, in their patch test series. This omission in U.S. testing protocols raises concern, especially given the rising rates of contact dermatitis in the general population.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           In fact, the American Contact Dermatitis Society (ACDS) named sulfites the "Allergen of the Year" for 2024 to highlight this exact gap in dermatologic care and encourage more comprehensive screening.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h2&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Testing Sulfites in Everyday Beverages
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h2&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           To better understand sulfite exposure in common consumer products, researchers are using practical tools such as sulfite test strips to analyze beverage samples. These strips react with sulfites in a drink, changing color to indicate concentration levels, usually ranging from 10 mg/L to 500 mg/L.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           For example:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;ul&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Wine can contain up to 350 mg/L of sulfites.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Beer generally falls in the 10–50 mg/L range.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Fruit juices and sodas may also contain sulfites, depending on the brand and preservatives used.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           While not as precise as laboratory methods like the Monier-Williams distillation-titration, test strips offer an accessible and cost-effective way to estimate sulfite levels, especially for research, public health studies, and consumer awareness.

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

Amongst the things that left the biggest impact on me, however, wasn’t just the medical care he received, it was the way his doctor took time to understand our culture, our language, and fears. That moment planted a seed. It showed me how healing is not just about diagnoses and procedures, it’s about connection, empathy, and advocacy.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           As I moved through my academic journey, I held onto that lesson when I faced a struggle of my own. I developed a persistent and painful skin condition that left me feeling reclusive and insecure. It was a challenging time, both physically, emotionally, and socially. But what changed everything was the care I received from my dermatologist. She saw me not just as a patient, but as a person. She treated me with compassion, listened to my concerns, and helped me feel confident in my skin again. That experience didn’t just heal my skin; it reignited my sense of self.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Dermatology quickly became the bridge between two of my deepest passions: the science of the human body and the power of restoring self-worth. I realized that the skin is so much more than just a physical barrier, it’s where we show up in the world. And when someone is battling a visible skin condition, it can affect every part of their identity. I want to be the kind of physician who sees that, who understands that, and who helps people reclaim their confidence.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           That desire took root early. While in college, I volunteered with the Look Good Feel Better program, working with patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiation. I helped teach skincare techniques, but more importantly, I witnessed the strength it took to battle terminal illnesses while holding onto self-esteem. Helping patients feel empowered, comfortable, beautiful, and seen, despite the toll of treatment, was a profound reminder of how powerful dermatologic care can be.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           As a medical student at Morehouse School of Medicine, I’ve had the opportunity to build on that foundation. I've worked with underserved communities and mentored other students navigating through the field of medicine. My experiences at Morehouse have reinforced what I believe to be true: medicine is about service, and dermatology is a unique space where science meets self-empowerment.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Now, as I prepare for residency, I carry all of those experiences with me the fear and hope I felt beside my father, the vulnerability of being a patient myself, and the privilege of standing alongside others in their own health journeys. These moments have shaped who I am and the kind of dermatologist I hope to become. Every person deserves to feel seen, valued, and confident and I’m committed to being a physician who helps make that possible.
